Travellers' Rest

Travellers' Rest The Travellers' Rest pub at Britannia is the starting-point for the Britannia Coconutters' Easter dance.

The present building is not the first of that name. Its previous location was on the old road into Bacup, and it was later moved to a more favourable position on the main "turnpike" road: a report in the Bacup Times of 14th March, 1908 says that the pub was to be "rebuilt and take over the licence of the Blue Ball".

The public house has an interesting history. It has been linked to different local breweries over the years, and is now a "Free House". The 1871 Census showed the inn managed by a widow, with a coalminer son and a daughter who was listed as a cotton weaver.

Present-day host Peter is always ready with a smile to welcome the tired traveller, in line with a fine local tradition of hostelries in the area.
